About

Join Myco for our day-long Functional Mushroom Course where we'll look at how to cultivate species such as reishi and cordyceps, as well as how to navigate the complex claims about their impacts on human health and wellbeing. With growing interest and excitement about the medical potential for functional mushrooms, it’s crucial that we’re able to make evidence-based choices. This workshop is aimed at building the skills to both see past the hype and grow some good quality mushrooms.

Who should attend

Though this course will not be focussed on cultivation, it’s suitable for both beginner mushroom growers interested in functional mushrooms, as well as more experienced mycologists who want to learn more about how to consume their harvests.

What is covered

  • Growing with monotubs (used to cultivate a wide range of species such as reishi, shimeji or

Psilocybe mushrooms; we will use reishi)

  • Growing cordyceps mushrooms (we will walk through William Padilla-Brown’s recipe, which is publicly available

here, and provide pre-prepared substrate for you to inoculate and take away)

  • Navigating medicinal and health claims about functional mushrooms and making informed choices

  • Troubleshooting and identifying contamination

Price

This course is offered on a sliding scale basis of £55 to £75, depending on what you can afford. The cost covers tuition, materials, hot drinks, and biscuits. This event is subject to our refund policy.

Venue & Accessibility

Bridge 5 Mill is a sustainable events space in Ancoats, Manchester. The address is: 22a Beswick Street,  Ancoats, Manchester, M4 7HR.

As part of the course you will make a monotub and some cordyceps culture to take home, so please bring a bag for these. They shouldn't be too heavy.

The venue is currently experiencing issues with it's lift, which might be out of action at the time of the course. The room we are in is down a small flight of four steps. After that point, there is level access to a wheelchair accessible toilet. Please let us know if you have any access requirements and we will try our best to meet them.

What to bring

Food and accommodation are not provided as part of this course, so please make your own food and accommodation arrangements if necessary. Please note the venue is vegetarian, so please bring a veggie packed lunch. There are some foods and snacks at the venue itself, please bring cash for these if you want to buy (think health food snacks).
